Guild Ball (#13): Grange vs Tapper

I get my first game with my son! This is his very first Guild Ball game with a full team. He wants the Brewers, maybe he is a bit young for that, but... :D

Farmers

Grange
Peck
Bushel
Jackstraw
Harrow
Windle

Brewers

Tapper (Captain)
Scum (Mascot)
Friday
Hooper
Spigot
Stave

Tapper goes up to kick ...and it's on!

Tapper is playing pretty aggressively, and Windle is coaxed of the field by his teammates. He manages to get within range of Tapper, taking him to half hit points. Next turn, Tapper is carried off the field on a stretcher.

Friday is in position, though! She tackles Jackstraw and the ball eventually gets passed on to Spigot, who scores!

That was all we had time for. The young whipper-snapper beats the old grizzled veteran 4-2!

X-Wing (#1): Darth Vader vs Luke Skywalker

After dinner & homework were done, Theodor Odin got to open the TIE Advanced pack I had traded for yesterday. Of course he decided to take Darth Vader for a spin, and I picked Luke Skywalker to make it a proper father-son fight. Each got a rookie sidekick and off we went.

Rebel (54 points)

Looks like someone's math was a bit off, Rebels seem to be fighting two points up.

Luke Skywalker X-Wing (28), BB-8 (2)
Blue Squadron Novice T-70 X-Wing (24)

Imperium (52 points)

Darth Vader TIE Advanced (29), Squad Leader (2), Cluster Missiles (4)
Epsilon Squadron Pilot TIE/fo Fighter (15), Weapons Guidance (2)

Round 1

Again, we are fighting in the skies over planet Flower IV. Everyone moves up and takes Focus. Everyone shoots and misses.

Round 2

The TIE fighter reverses course, but I move slowly and both my X-Wings can fire at it. I do some damage, but it survives. Darth fires a point blank salvo at the rookie but everything misses.

Round 3

Luke does a Koiogran turn and gets the Epsilon TIE/fo in its sights. All the shots hit and down it goes. Some shots from Vader knock off a couple of Luke's shields.

Round 4

Vader fires a double salvo of cluster missiles at poor Luke, who's Force is decidedly not with him at all. Luke is obliterated.

Round 5

The poor rookie X-Wing has no chance against the Dark Lord. First he gets target locked, focused, and then blinded by a critical hit, and cannot retaliate.

Round 6

Vader moves in for the kill and fires a focused salvo at point blank range. Blue Squadron Novice goes down in flames.

Post Mortem

A cinematic interpretation of the fight, showing how Darth Vader deals with anyone foolish enough to oppose the power of the dark side.

The young Sith adds insult to injury with a victory dab.

Spawn of Everblight #3: Lylyth1 vs Nemo1

Lylyth, Herald of Everblight (5 points)

Lylyth
* Carnivean
* 4x Shredder

Commander Adept Sebastian Nemo (0 points)

Commander Adept Sebastian Nemo
* Charger
* Firefly
* Ironclad

Deployment

Lylyth1 wins the die roll and deploys in safety behind the wall. Nemo1 grabs the hill.

Turn 1

Lylyth1 moves up.

Cygnar gets into position and shoots away one of the Shredders. Nemo1 forgets his plan which was to to feat and fry the Shredders. He is also out of range of the Ironclad and cannot buff it. Well well, no takebacks against kids!

Turn 2

Once again Cygnar has greatly underestimated the power of the Shredders. Parasite, some high dice rolls and bye bye Ironclad.

With so much of the army in ruins, Nemo1 goes for the hail mary. Nemo misses. The Charger misses on both shots. So much for the accuracy of the Swan.

Turn 3

Nemo1 is dragon food.

And Everblight is satisfied.

Spawn of Everblight #1: Lylyth1 vs Stryker1

My son got to visit our wargaming club for the first time! He was so excited yesterday that he was bouncing around in the living room. Today we packed his miniatures and the paint, and off we went.

Lylyth, Herald of Everblight (5 points)

Lylyth
* Carnivean
* 4x Shredder

Commander Coleman Stryker (0 points)

Commander Coleman Stryker
* Charger
* Firefly
* Ironclad

First things first. The correct front arcs were painted on all his models.

Turn 1

Lylyth moves up and grabs the zone. Offense is the best defense!

Charger gets Snipe and shreds a Shredder. Ironclad get Arcane Shield, moves up and contests the zone. Look at those little puny Shredders, what could they possibly do to an Ironclad?

Turn 2

Lylyth moves into the forest to get Stealth. She shoots the Ironclad and applies Parasite, and then shoots it again and applies Blood Lure. Carnivean assaults and blasts the Ironclad. The Shredder that is out of range runs in, and the rest of them charge for free with flank. The Ironclad has his cortex blown out his ear, and left hand crippled. Little blighted buggers, they hit hard!

Ironclad swings and kills off a Shredder with his good arm.

Turn 3

One Shredder frenzies but does not kill off his pack mate. Lylyth feats and tags the Charger with Parasite and Blood Lure, and after another assault spray and charge attack both the Ironclad and Charger die.

0-2

Stryker really has only one option. He spends his stack hacking the Carnivean to bits before it can eat him alive.

Turn 4

Lylyth aims and hits Stryker with the Parasite. The Shredders move in and munch on Stryker.

And so it ends. Poor Stryker!

Legion wins on assassination!

Everyone agreed that we had had an excellent time playing WARMACHINE! My son was ready for another round.

My son loves painting rivets just as much as I do

I thought my son was finished with his tiny self-designed mini, but today he was completely clear about what he wanted to do after dinner: Paint until bedtime!

He even painted in the rivets on the shield - black first, and then with metal highlights! And he started painting shade between the fingers on the gloves. Dad approves.

Behold the Pyg Dual Shieldgunner in all his glory:

Painting the crazy bit box models!

There were more bits in the bit box, so we put together some more models.

I am not quite sure what these monstrosities are, but they seem to be both many-armed and well-armed, with as many weapons as we could fit.

More crazy models!

Painting time!

The kids were really looking forward to painting their self-designed miniatures. I gave them a layer of black spray primer, and then they started painting.

The models get a layer of paint.
After completing the paint job they are ready to go out and "play miniatures". Pretty funny to hear them refer to the WARMACHINE models when they are out playing. I'm pretty sure my son was declaring he was trying to debuff his friend with a Parasite spell just now... :D

Edit: He was not done painting.

Who needs the assembly instructions anyway

My son has a friend visiting today. He thought my WARMACHINE and HORDES models were super cool. I asked if they wanted to paint something, and brought out my box of unused models and bits. I thought they would just pick out some models to assemble and paint, maybe a pirate or something, but of course they had a much, much better idea. Superglue and greenstuff can make anything attach to anything, so here we go...

BEHOLD! Their creations!

The Dire Runt Strangler

Always short, always angry, and always really really hungry, the Dire Runt Strangler goes for the throat, or whatever parts he can reach on his unfortunate victim.

The Dire Runt Strangler

 The Pyg Dual Shieldgunner

Sporting classy twin matching shields, the Pyg Dual Shieldgunner cowers behind his shields until the time has come to strike at point blank range with his single-barreled dual-grip pistol.

The Pyg Dual Shieldgunner

The Cyclone Flightknight

This clumsy knight walked into the Warjack factory one day, fell onto the assembly line, and ended up with slightly fewer arms, twin chain guns, and a rocket pack. He has never been happier as he whizzes through the air, unloading red hot ammo on the enemies of Cygnar.

The Cyclone Flightknight
I can't wait to see how these will be painted...

Edit: now I know. :D

Boardgames for kids: Treasure Hunter

Today, we tried Treasure Hunter! The game consists of hiring adventurers to find treasure and hire guard dogs to fend off the goblins that try to steal your newly won phat loot.

Every round, the board is randomly set up with treasures and goblins. Some are good to get, and a few are bad.

The game is a drafting game. Every player gets nine cards with various effects, choose one to keep, and passes the rest of the cards to the next player. After all the cards have been passed around, each player then has a hand of nine cards.

The cards are then shown, and the players get the treasures and defeat the goblins depending on which card they played, The trick is that you either need to have the strongest or the weakest band of adventurers in order to get a treasure. If you have no adventurers, or a medium strength one, you get nothing.

What to keep, what to give...

The game is simple enough for 8 year olds to play. It requires a bit of math - they need to know at least how to add up to a hundred or so, and some simple multiplication.

Rounds are almost simultaneous, which is good for kids, so that they do not have to wait around for a long time before it is their turn.

There is a lot of luck and a lot of guessing involved, which is good for when kids and adults play together. You don't need to dumb down your game for them to win, which is something I hate to do. Theodor Odin barely beat my friend Leif in his very first complete game.

From left to right: Winner, runner-up, happy loser Leif
There are lots of little wins and losses each turn, which makes the game exciting as it progresses. There is no catchup mechanic, cooperation, or sabotage, and hence no kingmaking, which is good in game for kids. You can't really blame other players for deliberately targeting you if things go bad, so less arguments. Well, you can, but... :D

Young kids will probably need some help to do the end of game scoring accurately.

Game time is fairly short, the game takes about 45 minutes to play.

Forskning rundt dataspillavhengighet - Rune Mentzoni svarer

http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/15213269.2012.756374

Se over.
http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/gpr/14/2/68/

References regarding online gaming addiction

During the recent discussion on NRK's news article about online gaming addiction, I got sent several interesting links. I'll collect them here:

Books

I started reading this one yesterday.

"This book explores gaming culture, focusing on competent players and excessive use. Addressing the contested question of whether addiction is possible in relation to computer games - specifically online gaming - A World of Excesses demonstrates that excessive playing does not necessarily have detrimental effects, and that there are important contextual elements that influence what consequences playing has for the players. Based on new empirical studies, including in-depth interviews and virtual ethnography, and drawing on material from international game related sites, this book examines the reasons for which gaming can occupy such a central place in people's lives, to the point of excess. As such, it will be of interest to sociologists and psychologists working in the fields of cultural and media studies, the sociology of leisure, information technology and addiction."

NRK påstår at barn blir psykisk syke av dataspill

Apologies for this post being in Norwegian. It's about a news article posted on the Norwegian state broadcasting service blaming (amongst other things) computer games for young people's mental illness.

NRK postet i dag denne artikkelen:

http://www.nrk.no/norge/_-barn-blir-syke-av-dataspill-og-skilsmisser-1.12597434

Seksjonsleder
Vigdis A. Raad

Jeg etterlyste mer data:

Hei Vigdis,

Takk for svar!
[...]

Seksjonsleder
Vigdis A. Raad

My son is doing passive scouting

I have joined IRF Clan in World of Tanks, which has led to an increase in tanking in the evenings after my son has gone to bed. Unfortunately, it seems I nevertheless have been spotted whizzing around the battlefield in my trusty AMX 13 90 by my son.

Nothing is of course more fun than doing things one is not supposed to do - and being deemed too young to play, or even watch, World of Tanks is a pretty harsh fate indeed. Or in his words, "It's so unfair that all the coolest games are just for adults!" Which is true, I guess. So, it seems like my son has taken to, on occasion, sneak ever so quietly out of his room after bedtime, and watching me from the shadows (no mean feat, since there are no bushes around to enhance his camo value).

But, on the plus side, he has been inspired to design a very powerful tank!

Cool Tier XI Heavy Dragon Tank with Lava Shots and Magnifying Glass.

Not only does it have impenetrable heavy armor, it has very cool spikes and wings, and a magnifying glass to help it to spot better. To preserve game balance, the magnifying glass is also a major weak spot. I think that overall it's probably at least tier XI. Observe also the premium ammo - complete with lava cracks. I estimate the penetration value of these shots to be extremely high, but it should probably be kept well away from the fuel tanks. I would advise training Safe Stowage skill on the gunner.

Puny AMX 13 90 which Dad drives.
He also pointed out the unfairness that I should be driving around in such a puny tank while all he others are so big. Above is a size comparison of the tank I drive (AMX 13 90), compared to his lava-ball-shooting monster.

Teaching kids Dominion

It's summertime, cabin time, and gaming time! But danger lurks. There are lots of excruciatingly boring games for children out there, and if you give them to your kids you're probably going to have to suffer through them on rainy days, repeatedly, ad nauseum. So, avoid the bad old "classics" like Monopoly, Risk, and Snakes and Ladders - and teach your kids some games that are actually fun to play every day!

If your kid can read a little and do some basic math, I would like to recommend Dominion. This is one of the best games ever made, with almost endless variety. Like most good, modern games it has relatively simple rules, and a lot of hidden depth. One of the things that makes Dominion a great game for playing with kids is that even if you are a decent player, there is some element of luck, so no matter what you do you will get your ass handed to you occasionally.

Six and six and six...
Here are some tips on how to make it easier to teach kids Dominion.

Start with simple Kingdom cards

In the beginning, hand pick the Kingdom cards. Start by using the simpler cards (like Smithy, Village, Market, and so on), and introduce the more complex cards and less straight-forward strategies after they have learned the basics. Most kids seem to love attack cards, so make sure there are some in the mix. Kingdoms that are heavy on Curse slow down the game a lot, so if the kids are too young or impatient to play a long game, it might be better to not use these cards in the beginning. If they have some favorite cards, have them in the mix!

Introduce new cards slowly

After you play a game, swap out one to three cards. It will make it way easier to learn the game if you keep the Kingdoms fairly similar in the beginning.

Play two or three player games

Two or three player games take way less time than four (or, horribly, five or six) players, so if the kids are impatient it might be a good idea to limit number of players to two or three. As they become better they will probably start playing the game faster, which will make it more fun to add in a fourth player.

Be patient

Dominion requires a lot of thinking, counting, math, and reading, so be prepared to spend much more time on each game than if you play with experienced players. Even so, I think it's important not to rush kids. Let them think and choose for themselves, but correct them if they happen to miscount, or break the rules! I think giving some occasional strategy advice is good, but make sure they get to do the decisions. Don't sit there and try to make them play every hand in the optimal way. In my experience, most people do not enjoy having other players play games for them, and most also find it annoying to be flooded with well-meant advice - and it might be easier to fall into this trap with children (who might not be inclined to tell you to just shut the fuck up and mind your own damn cards, thank you very much).

Play oddball strategies

I'm of the opinion that one should usually not deliberately throw games with kids. There are some reasons for this. First off, if they are smart enough to play Dominion they'll probably figure it out in no time, and no-one likes to find out they won like that. Also, I'll be taking away from them the joy of crushing me fair and square for the first time! In addition, it's quite simply very unsatisfying for me to not play a game to win, and the point here was to have fun with the kids. But even if you're way better than them there is a legit trick you can do in order to even the odds a bit, without deliberately throwing the game.

In Dominion, there are usually many potential ways to win. So, if I'm playing with kids, I use it as a nice opportunity to try oddball strategies. Often there will be some weird, long-shot strategy in the Kingdom! So skip that Smithy-Big Money and see if you can't find something crazy. Or just use a variant on a normal strategy and see what happens if you try to do it slightly differently. It could be a fun learning experience for you as well!

Basic strategies

After the kids have learnt the mechanics, these are some of the more important strategies that you might want to teach them.
  • Don't buy Victory cards in the beginning.
  • Buy some money in the beginning! Some silver and (later) gold is almost always a good idea.
  • Don't buy too many cards with no +Actions.
  • Start getting Duchies when the Provinces are emptying out.
Then, you might try to teach something about card synergy.
  • One-card combos (like multiple Laboratory and Market)
  • Two-card combos (like Smithy / Council Room + Money, or Smithy / Village)
Once they have learnt these things, you might find that you will have to start fighting harder to win! So, best of luck... to your kids! :D

My son's first (and second) HORDES game

So, my son is soon six years, and I gave him a Legion starter last summer. Today, he said he wanted to play with miniatures! And so we did.

First game

His list:

Lylyth1
- Carnivean
- Swamp Gobbers

My list:

Madrak1
- Mauler

First, we pretended his Carnivean was painted completely white.

Theodor Odin's army is attacking. His dice are hot!
We started pretty close. He walked up his Carnivean, it used Spiny Growth on itself, and sprayed Madrak1. I transferred the damage to the Mauler. Then, he popped the Gobber smoke, walked Lylyth behind it, and shot the Mauler twice with Lylyth, taking out its Mind.

My turn, I cut myself for one Fury, walked up and threw Rathrok at the Carnivean and did almost no damage. My son said the game was boring now. I told him he had a blast a moment ago. He said he thought it was more fun to play his own turn than to watch my turn (I can see his point...) :D . We agreed to continue. Then, the Mauler healed itself, charged in, hit the Carnivean twice and did some damage, I then Smash & Grabbed it and threw it on the Gobbers, killing them both.

He then activated the Carnivean and proceeded to dismantle the Mauler, and then he used Spiny growth on Lylyth. Lylyth shot Madrak twice, leaving him at six boxes.

Carnivean and Mauler duking it out
I cut myself for five fury, leaving one box. I charged past the Carnivean at Lylyth, the free strike from the Carnivean connected, and that was that. Victory to my son! :D

Victory roar!

Second game

His army has been reinforced by four Shredders,
two elephants and a bomber plane
My son added his four Shredders to his force and I added an Impaler and Alten Ashley. He asked me what Alten did. I said he killed big monsters. He looked a bit concerned at this rather disturbing piece of news, and asked me not to take him. Lanyssa looked less threatening, I guess, so I got to take her instead.

My son was adamant that he wanted a huge big forest in the middle of the table, so he grabbed a green Duplo LEGO board and built a forest. He did this since he remembered from this summer that Legion can see through forests, and the trolls can´t. The little cheater, already placing the terrain to his benefit! After this, he filled the forest with traps I didn't know about, and put an elephant on either side. When my Impaler entered the forest it took forty damage from some rotating flowers and died. I tried to walk around the forest but the elephants blew me back. After this a LEGO bomber plane entered the fray, destroying the Mauler, and his monster truck ran over Madrak, dealing forty damage. So I lost this game as well!

I asked my son which game he liked the most, and he said it was the second one. I am not surprised. We had a really, really good time! :D

Happy Rainbow Legion

My son and his cousins have started painting the Legion warpack. He now has one half-painted white and purple Carnivean, and two extremely colorful Shredders. :D

Daddy Carnivean

I got my son a gift at the ETC... He had been looking at an issue of No Quarter, and really liked the Everblight models (since they were the scariest). So, I bought him a Legion of Everblight starter. He was pretty pleased about this turn of events, and we glued the models today. In a curious twist to the established mythology, it seems like the Carnivean is the daddy, Lylyth is the mommy and the four little Shredders are the children. I guess this is how a Legion nuclear family is.

He is very eager to start painting them now, and seems to be planning to enlist the support of his cousins in this regard. I will keep you appraised on the artistic results of this audacious plan.

Oh, by the way, he is five. :D
