Battle Report #67: Nemo3 vs Karchev (Team Tournament #1)

In the first game in the team tournament I get thrown under the bus end end up with a pretty bad matchup against Karchev, played by Odd-Erik. Nemo3 may hit hard, but Karchev has too many boxes to assassinate easily, and 8 Heavies is a lot to chew through.

Artificer General Nemo (75 points)

Artificer General Nemo & Storm Chaser Finch (Nemo3)
* Reinholdt
* Dynamo
* Firefly
* Thorn
Journeyman Warcaster
* Firefly
Gun Mage Captain Adept
Major Katherine Laddermore
5+3 Storm Lances

Karchev the Terrible (75 points)

Theme: Winter Guard Kommand

* 3x Juggernaut
* 2x Kodiak
* 2x Marauder
* Devastator
4 Battle Mechanics
6 Winter Guard Infantry

Deployment

I win the die roll and go first, and spread out. Karchev bricks up in the middle, as Karchevs have done since time immemorial.

Turn 1

I run up and fan out, hoping to be able to get some angle.

Karchev moves up. Winter Guard fan out behind him, ready to be sacrificed.

Turn 2

Well, I guessed I played that a bit too defensively, probably I should have had the Lances a bit closer.

Anyway, I think I see an opening. A firefly runs in and jams up everything on the left flank, getting within 5" of Karchev. Thorn moves up. Nemo feats ands arcs a couple of Chain Lightnings through Thorn at Karchev, removing all his sac pawn targets. The GMCA moves up and tries to tag Karchev (should have done that first!), but missing on his 4+ roll. Lances assault as well as they can. It's all down to Dynamo! He needs 6's to hit... and misses on the two first rolls.

Nemo is well within reach of several Khador jacks so we shake hands.

Khador wins by assassination!

Post Mortem

Difficult matchup for Nemo, so I think I was right to go for it when I had a possible opening! A feated Dynamo does around 40 damage to ARM 19 Karchev if all the shots connect, and with the Chain Lightnings, two shots from Nemo, a Firefly shot, and a couple of assaulting Lances it could have happened.

My teammates win both their matches, so even if I failed Team Lightning Shroud is now 1-0, which is good!

Norwegian Masters Team Tournament 2017

After Norwegian Masters I teamed up with my friends Nima and Kuba from the 2D6 gaming club to do a 3-round team tournament. We each had one list - Nima played Kaelyssa, and Kuba played Ossrum and the Gunbunnies. I had played 4 Haley2 games in the Masters yesterday, so I went with Nemo3.

Battle Report #66: Nemo3 vs Stryker1 (Norwegian Masters 2017 #5)

Of course it had to happen after I got list locked into Nemo3. I face Cygnar and Lasse is list locked into Stryker1. Nemo3 is all about lightning and in theme Stryker1 is immune. I have no feat, and no shooting. Essentially half my army does nothing, and I cannot win.

Artificer General Nemo (75 points)

Objective: Armory

Artificer General Nemo & Storm Chaser Finch (Nemo3)
* Reinholdt

The "Game"

What happens is that we play three turns, I grab the two control points that I could possibly manage to grab before getting tabled, and I concede. We shake hands, I grab a beer and we relax and watch the other games!

An impotent force hits an immovable object

Post Mortem

Everyone cracked up completely when we told them what happened. :D

Bit unlucky with that one, and of course kicking myself for not dropping Nemo3 in the first game against the double Gargantuans. I ended up going 3-2, and in 17th place out of 64 players. My strength of schedule was of course poor since I lost the first game. I had a great day, and my goal for the tournament was getting more wins than losses, so all in all it went rather well. Also, I got to play good games with friendly people all day!

Me, Nima and Kuba then decided to register a team for the 3-round Team Tournament next day, and then I went home to sleep.

Battle Report #65: Haley2 vs Vlad2 (Norwegian Masters 2017 #4)

After one of the Haley2s winning the last game, I meet Scottish player David Kane. Again I think I will need Haley2 against this, leaving me list locked for the last match.

Major Victoria Haley (75 points)

Theme: Storm Division
Objective: Armory

Major Victoria Haley (Haley2)
* Squire
* Stormwall
* Thorn
Journeyman Warcaster
* Firefly
Major Katherine Laddermore
5+3 Storm Lances

Vladimir Tzepisci, The Dark Champion (75 points)

Another Dark Champion!
A different Khador list from what I am used to see, this is going to be exciting!

Vladimir Tzepisci, The Dark Champion (Vlad2)
* Conquest
Man-O-War Kovnik
Saxon Orrik
4 Battle Mechanics
10 Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters
* Koldun Kapitan Valachev
2x2 Kayazy Eliminators
5 Man-O-War Shocktroopers
* Man-O-War Shocktrooper Officer

Deployment

Vlad wins the die roll. Conquest takes the center, with Nyss on the left and the Shocktropper brick on the right. I place Haley2 in the center to try to feat on as much as I can later. Laddermore goes with the left side Lances in order to hopefully electroleap many Nyss. Firefly and Max Lances go on the right,

Turn 1

Vlad moves up. I move up, I shoot the Conquest a bit.

Turn 2

I had forgotten about Hunter. The Nyss shoot away all the left side Lances, but play by me to leave all within shooting range. One right side Lance also gets shot. At this point I am starting to feel a bit worried.

A charging Laddermore clear some Nyss on the left side. Stormwall moves in and starts punching the Conquest, taking out about half of it and murdering some Nyss with electro leaps. Haley feats, and I use Telekinesis on some of those shield walled Shocktroppers, making them easy prey for the Lances, which kill half of them on the charge. I am a bit worried about the Conquest just shooting Haley and spiking, so I stay a bit back. Unfortunately that means I cannot get his back line in my feat. Good job for my opponent spreading out so well!

I score the right flag.

1-0

Turn 3

Mechanics fix the Conquest, he punches back. Vlad feats and some Eliminators do a number on the Storm Lances, but luckily Laddermore survives and keeps on contesting.

Laddermore kills more Nyss. Stormwall punches more Conquest, electroleaping all the repair dudes. I think the Conquest was left at one Movement box or something like that. I try to spell away the contesting Eliminators with Haley and Thorn, but they live. Squire moves into position to try to grab the left flag.

Turn 4 and 5

We are getting short on time, so no more photos until the end. I can't recall exactly in what order what happened, so I'll summarize the action on each flank,

On the left flag, I grab the left flag first with the Journeyman, and then with the Squire. Haley moves in that direction to add some Arcane Bolts to the mix. Everything there dies in the back-and-forth, leaving me with a Squire on the flag and Vlad with nothing to contest on the left flank.

In the center, my badly dinged up Stormwall finally murders the Conquest and also the contesting Man-O-War.

With me firmly in control of the left flank, and a Stormwall in the center, there is no way for Vlad to contest me. If I remember correctly the final score is 5-2, with almost everything dead.

5-2

Post Mortem

The best and most exiting game I had during the weekend! I was pretty sure I would lose when I went down on attrition right at the beginning, but Haley is Haley, and when I managed to clear the left flank then the win was assured. I am happy that I managed to play the scenario and move models to flag capping positions, it's something I still sometimes forget.

My opponent was very nice all through the match, we played a clean and enjoyable tactical game that was tense all the way through. Afterwards we grabbed a beer and waited for the last round to begin.

I was list locked into Nemo3, and all I could hope for was "please, please, no Cygnar Storm Division mirror in the last match". Guess what happens.

Battle Report #64: Haley2 vs Haley2 (Norwegian Masters 2017 #3)

Oh gods, please, no no no, not this bullshit again. After the previous game against Vlad2 I draw Cygnar and Morten with his Haley2/Haley3 pairing. Same opponent as the Internal Affairs VII tournament, almost identical list, at least one Haley too many on the board. Again, everyone who saw it said we deserved each other! Where is the sympathy for the Swan, I ask?

Nice Major Victoria Haley (75 points)

Theme: Storm Division
Objective: Armory

Major Victoria Haley (Haley2)
* Squire
* Stormwall
* Thorn
Journeyman Warcaster
* Firefly
Major Katherine Laddermore
5+3 Storm Lances

Naughty Major Victoria Haley (75 points)

Why U Do Dis Morten

A slightly worse version of my list. Morten did not have time to paint everything, so he loses a free solo compared to me.

Theme: Storm Division

Major Victoria Haley (Haley2)
* Squire
* Ironclad
* Stormwall
* Thorn
Journeyman Warcaster
* Firefly
3+3 Storm Lances

Deployment

I win the die roll. Line of Lightning Immune models on both sides. These guys have the most expensive clubs ever.

Turn 1

I run up

Stuff stands away from each other.

Turn 2

I Dominate out the Ironclad and shoot it a lot with the Stormwall, but it does not lose any systems.

Ironclad smashes Thorn, not good. But, Morten had placed Haley2 too far back to move into the killbox without running. He decided to lose two points instead of not casting any spells. Either way, it's a total disaster for him.

2-0

Turn 3

Normally whoever feats last wins, but Morten's misplay gives me a golden opportunity. I go up to the flag, feat, and jam so that he cannot possible get anything in to contest. The game is in reality done at this point.

3-0

Morten counterfeats, but cannot contest.

4-0

Turn 4

I pass.

5-0

At least it was over quickly

Post Mortem

Morten derped and I won. If I never, ever, play this bullshit matchup again, it's too soon. On the plus side, the game was done in 40 minutes or something, so we got a lot of time relax and grab a beer.

Battle Report #63: Haley2 vs Vlad2 (Norwegian Masters 2017 #2)

After that rough double Gargantuan fight in round #1 I am paired against Glenn, a fellow Norwegian that I have not met before.

Major Victoria Haley (75 points)

Theme: Storm Division
Objective: Armory

Major Victoria Haley (Haley2)
* Squire
* Stormwall
* Thorn
Journeyman Warcaster
* Firefly
Major Katherine Laddermore
5+3 Storm Lances

Vladimir Tzepesci, The Dark Champion (75 points)

Vlad is an interesting caster, since he can turn any of his chaff models into crazy killers.

Glenn, The Dark Champion
Vladimir Tzepesci, The Dark Champion
* 2x Kodiak
2x Man-O-War Drakhun
2x Manhunter
Kovnik Jozeg Grigorovich
2x Kayazy Eliminators
5 Iron Fang Uhlans
6 Winter Guard Rifle Corps
* 3x Rocketeer

Deployment

Vlad wins the roll and off we go. I put the min Lances to harass the left flank and deny points, while setting up the rest of the army to grab the right zone.

Turn 1

Khador moves up.

I scoot up, with 2 of the left side Lances outside Uhlan charge range. Storm Lances are in position to clear the right zone.

Turn 2

The Winter Guard move up and actually manage to shoot Laddermore off her horse! I should have kept her a bit further back, I guess.

Turn 2 is Haley Feat turn. Stormwall smashes one Kodiak to bits. I forget the countercharge from the right side Drakhun, but he rolls terribly and fails to kill a Lance. Storm Lances and Laddermore clear the zone and jam up the Drakhun and Winter Guard as well as they can.

2-0

Turn 3

Vlad feats. Some of the left flank Uhlans are outside my feat range, and a couple of Lances go down. I should have placed them further away! The right side Drakhun murders two Storm Lances all by himself. Drakhuns are beastly! A couple of Winter Guard toe into my zone.

2-1

I smash the other Kodiak to bits. Lances and Laddermore clear my zone again and get rid of that pesky Drakhun.

4-1

Turn 4

The left zone is cleared but there is no way for Vlad to do much about the right zone. A couple of Eliminators go  to contest.

4-3

Haley2 blasts away the Eliminators with Arcane Bolts. The Stormwall toes into his zone.

5-3

Post Mortem

Typical Haley2 play here, using her feat both to get up on attrition and start capping points quickly! I feel I played this one solidly, I did make some mistakes with losing Laddermore early and some poor Lance positioning,

Battle Report #62: Haley2 vs Ragnor (Norwegian Masters 2017 #1)

First game in Norwegian Masters! I meet Swedish player Johan Sånesson, who seems to be coming down with the flu or something. I think he has Horgle2 as his other list. Haley2 is usually good against trolls so I drop her. He drops a double gargantuan Ragnor list. This seems like a lot to chew through...

Major Victoria Haley (75 points)

Theme: Storm Division
Objective: Armory

Major Victoria Haley (Haley2)
* Squire
* Stormwall
* Thorn
Journeyman Warcaster
* Firefly
Major Katherine Laddermore
5+3 Storm Lances

Ragnor Skysplitter, the Runemaster (75 points)

Theme: The Power of Dhunia

Ragnor Skysplitter, the Runemaster (Ragnor1)
* Trollkin Runebearer
* Earthborn Dire Troll
* Mountain King
* Glacier King
* Troll Axer
Janissa Stonetide
5 Troll Whelps
4 Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes
* Stone Scribe Elder

Deployment

Horrible scenario really, I cannot force him to split up. We'll see how hard this is...

Turn 1

He moves up.

I move up.

Turn 2

Trolls move up more, shooting Laddermore but she stays on the horse. Ragnor feats.

I envelop him and feat, hoping to threathen his backline.

Turn 3

He shuffles a bit and shoots a Storm Lance. I have to take care to spread the Lances out in a better way so that no-one goes out of command if the leader dies...

I go for one gargantuan but fail to kill it. Storm Lances go into his back line.

Turn 4

Rage and Pulverizer = one really really dead Stormwall. My objective is destroyed, too.

0-2

I have lost on attrition, but Ragnor is exposed. I remove the stone, hit him with a barrage of spells from Haley, and follow up with shots from the Firefly, Laddermore and Storm Lances. I barely fail, he is left at 3 boxes!

Turn 5

Om nom nom. Haley's spear Echo makes for a nice toothpick after a meal.

At least I got eaten by some good looking trolls!

Trollbloods win by assassination!

Post Mortem

That matchup is really hard on a dead scenario like this. I could have gone on the right side and tried to get Haley onto a flag, possibly, and maybe jammed him out.

In retrospect, maybe Nemo3 could have done this better... even he has problems taking out 2 gargantuans, but if one dies then it might get very hard to protect Ragnor afterwards.

Norwegian Masters 2017

The Norwegian Masters tournament is complete! The organizers did a fantastic job. Doing a 5 round + finals tournament in one single day is quite busy for everyone, but they managed to get everything started (and finished) when it was supposed to be done. The 2D6 club had made a completely new set of 2D terrain to play on, with 3D obstacles. All the scenarios and maps were in small convenient booklets.

Norwegian Masters underway

Lots of players had arrived from Sweden, Finland and Scotland. I got to play a couple of them, always great to face some new opponents!

Norwegian Masters (64-man Steamroller)

Jarle took the win, ending the finals with a quick Nemo3 pop-n-electrocute on Ossrum.

I went 3-2, which I think was a decent result.

Round #1: Haley2 vs Ragnor
Round #2: Haley2 vs Vlad2
Round #3: Haley2 vs Haley2 (not again!)
Round #4: Haley2 vs Vlad2
Round #5: Nemo3 vs Stryker1

I was a bit unfortunate by meeting 3 tanky lists that I think all required Haley2. Possibly Nemo3 could have dealt with Ragnor, but I was hoping to get some infantry spam later to drop him into. Also I had to drop Haley2 whenever I met Storm Division.

Jarle showing how it is done

In the last match I was then list locked, thinking "anything but Cygnar", and of course I got a Storm Division drop. This is pretty much an auto loss for me, so we cut the game short once it was obvious I could get no more Control Points.

Team Tournament (8 Team Steamroller)

On Sunday Nima, Kuba and I registered for the 3-round team tournament! I had played so much Haley so I decided to pick Nemo3 for this one. Our team did well, and went 2-1 and ended up in 3rd place overall. I did not do so well, making some mistakes and losing all my games, but hey, picking great teammates than can carry you is the #1 skill in team tournament, right?

Round #1: Nemo3 vs Karchev
Round #2: Nemo3 vs Una2
Round #3: Nemo3 vs Coven

Battle reports will be coming as soon as I get some rest after playing 8 Warmachine games in two days!

The future: My plan was to play Haley2 and Caine2 (and then, after the nerfs, Haley2 and Nemo3) until the Norwegian Masters tournament. I am already looking at some other lists to play! I haven't yet tried Haley3 and I guess every Cygnar player should have her in the stable. For the other list, I'm looking at trying out Stryker1 and even (gasp) Maddox!

Moot Point's Podcast about the tournament.
