Looking forward to roll dice, meet old friends, and German beer and food 😊

The hosts of the Euromachine podcast thought my armies were awesome, so download episode 10 if you want to hear about them, as well as my teammate Amund's dorfs, discussion around the 26 minute mark.

Battle Report #71: Maddox vs Zaal2

Second Maddox game after facing Krueger2 in my first game. This time it's Skorne and Zaal2. Zaal2 is an amazingly cool Warlock, with the ability to suck in souls and use them for all kinds of shenanigans.

Major Beth Maddox (75 points)

Objective: Bunker
Theme; Storm Division

Major Beth Maddox (Maddox1)
* Squire
* Ironclad
* Stormclad
Journeyman Warcaster
* Firefly
Major Katherine Laddermore
Savio Montero Acosta
Stormblade Captain
5+5 Storm Lances
6 Stormblades
* Stormblade Infantry Officer & Standard

Zaal, The Ancestral Advocate (75 points)

Zaal, The Ancestral Advocate (Zaal2)
* Basilisk Krea
* Cyclops Raider
* Cyclops Shaman
* Titan Cannoneer
2x Ancestal Guardian
Extoller Soulward
Hakaar the Destroyer
10 Immortals
* Extoller Advocate
10 Immortals
* Extoller Advocate
4 Paingiver Beast Handlers

Deployment

My opponent wins the die roll. I try a new deployment pattern to check out how the Captain works. I have never played with the Tactician ability before, but in theory it should allow wave after wave of Blades and Lances to flow through a sea of immortals.

Turn 1

Immortals run up.

I move up centrally, with a mass of Storm Lances on the right flank.

Turn 2

Zaal feats and runs up. A couple of Stormblades die.

And--- it works beautifully. ARM 22 Immortals are hard to kill with leaps, but they sure die fast to POW 18 feated Storm Lances, even impact attacks kill on 8+. Tactician allow Laddermore to go in first, followed by the Blades, followed by a wave of Storm Lances, then a wave of Arcane Shielded Storm Lances, and they all clear a lane for the ironclad that proceeds to smash Hakaar to bits. Zaal2 gets a stack of soul tokens so bigly it can make Skorne great again.

Turn 3

Skorne hits back, and boy do those Ancestral Guardians punch. One of them even murders my Stormclad (almost) single handedly! Even though I lose both jacks, it hardly seems to be enough.

Another wave goes in, murdering all the remaining Immortals and the Cannoneer.

Turn 4

The Skorne army is massively down on attrition. The left Ancestral Guardian murders Laddermore too. 26 points killed by a 5 point solo, he will be getting a post-posthumous medal from his Skorne overlords. Next time I am focusing down these bastards first!

It's all gone, Zaal.

Turn 5

But of course I have forgotten about his Righteous Vengeance! Zaal manages to scoot out, tank some free strikes, kill my Officer on the Vengeance strike, open a charge lane on Maddox, and kill her on the very last blow!

Skorne wins by assassination!

Post Mortem

You did not see that one coming, I guess! Neither did poor Maddox. Well, now I know about *that* trick and shall not fall for it again, and of course why expose your caster when you have tabled the opponent? Such a silly thing to do.

Still looking good for the list. In retrospect the Immortals should have spread out more and not given me so many models on my feat turn, but it's hard to know what lists do when you have never faced them before. No-one expects Cygnar to murder a swarm of ARM 22 dudes, but Maddox can deliver the hurt!

Battle Report #70: Maddox vs Krueger2

My first Maddox game ever! My opponent wants to test out a possible anti-Cygnar Circle list. Models within 9" of Krueger2 get Immunity: Electricity, which shuts down Nemo3 and also prevents a lot of Cygnar shooting. Tharn Bloodtrackers with Wraithbane are also heavy anti Cygnar tech, since they will outthreat the Storm Lances under Krueger2, and can kill them quite easily.

Major Beth Maddox (75 points)

Objective: Bunker
Theme; Storm Division

Major Beth Maddox (Maddox1)
* Squire
* Ironclad
* Stormclad
Journeyman Warcaster
* Firefly
Major Katherine Laddermore
Savio Montero Acosta
Stormblade Captain
5+5 Storm Lances
6 Stormblades
* Stormblade Infantry Officer & Standard

Krueger the Stormlord (75 points)

This list is from before the Scarfell Griffon lost Long Leash.

Krueger the Stormlord (Krueger2)
* Feral Warpwolf
* Megalith
* Pureblood Warpwolf
Una the Falconeer
* Scarsfell Griffon
Blackclad Wayfarer
Gallows Grove
2x Senty Stone & Mannikins
Shifting Stones
10 Tharn Bloodtrackers

Deployment

Krueger wins the first move and deploys skewed slightly towards to left zone. I think my Storm Lances can keep the right flank clear and start scoring there while we fight for the left zone.

Turn 1

Krueger2 moves up towards the left zone. He has miscalculated my threat ranges and does not have the Tharn Bloodtrackers in the lightning immune bubble. It turns out later that he should also have used Windstorm to make my Lances shoot less far.

Lances assault and murder all but 4 Blood Trackers. Ironclad toes into the zone, so that he can walk back in after Krueger2's feat. Stormblades minifeat and run up. Acosta goes into the trench, threatening to charge and kill the Gallows Grove.

Turn 2

Krueger moves up and feats. A lot of my stuff gets caught but I have one untouched Lance on the left, and two on the right. Two of my Lances get killed.

One Lance can charge the Scarsfell, and together with the Firefly it dies. the Ironclad toes back into the zone. The right side Sentry is killed by a Lance, and Acosta caps my first point.

1-0

Turn 3

The wolves kill a few Lances and my Ironclad lives with intact Cortex and Fist.

2-0

It's Maddox feat time! The charge kills all three Circle heavies dead. Only Krueger and a Blackclad remains on the table, and Maddox is camping three and un-assasinatable.

4-0

There is of course no way to for him to win now, and we shake hands.

Cygnar wins on scenario!

Post Mortem

My opponent misplayed the beginning of the match by not protecting his Tharn Bloodtrackers, and it all went downhill from there. I am playing 19 points up, which is almost an entire max unit of Lances, and him losing the unit that could deal with the Lances was a total disaster. I think that played properly, the list poses a number of interesting questions to Cygnar. Of course Maddox does not depend so heavily on the electrical shooting compared to Nemo3, but denying me this would have helped him a lot, by making it possible for him to get a shooting alpha.

First impression of the list is good! Maddox hits hard and gets a massive army in theme. Next game is against Zaal, the Ancestral Advocate.

Battle Report #69: Nemo3 vs Coven (Team Tournament #3)

In the last round we face Team Odden in the finals! I get matched up with Coven. Nima gets Amon and Kuba gets the birds again. All our opponents are strong players so we know this one is going to be pretty hard.

I haven't played Coven since I had a long string of fights playing Caine2 against Jonas in Mk2. I know their spell assassination is a bit weaker now, but still they have a really strong feat and are quite dangerous.

Artificer General Nemo (75 points)

Artificer General Nemo & Storm Chaser Finch (Nemo3)
* Reinholdt
* Dynamo
* Firefly
* Thorn
Journeyman Warcaster
* Firefly
Gun Mage Captain Adept

The Witch Coven of Garlghast (75 points)

The Witch Coven of Garlghast
* Skarlock Thrall
* Barathrum
* Deathjack
* Deathripper
* Slayer
2x Machine Wraith
Necrotech
5 Soul Hunters
10 Satyxis Raiders
* Sea Witch

Deployment

Unfortunately he wins the die roll and goes first, which is going to put a lot of pressure on me. I spread out my troops, and so does he.

Turn 1

Coven runs up.

I am able to sling a Chain Lightning into the Satyxis, taking out a couple.

Turn 2

Witches run in to jam and the Coven feats.

I clear all the jammers, but Nemo3 ends up too close to the front lines.

Turn 3

I guess I am a bit tired at this point, but I completely forgot he could kill the objective. One jack murders the objective and Deathjack snacks on Nemo3.

Cryx wins by assassination!

Post Mortem

Damn, I keep getting Nemo killed. Killbox against Coven when they get the first turn is rough, though. Afterwards we discussed the situation, and there was actually a rock on the right side that was outside the killbox. Probably I should have moved towards there instead.

I am bit sad to go 0-3, but after this quick loss at least I get time to look at what my more competent teammates are up to.

Tournament Results

Unfortunately, Nima loses to Amon after a long and hard fought match!

Kuba finishes in style and has a personal 3-0 in the tournament!

The happy winners - Geir, Kenneth and Asbjørn!

Team Odden takes the win!

All in all Team Lightning Shroud ends up in 3rd place! A good showing for the team (and the Norwegians)!

Team Lightning Shroud!

Battle Report #68: Nemo3 vs Una2 (Team Tournament #2)

After the fight against Karchev we move on to the second round in the team tournament, facing a trio of Norwegian farmers from Samvirkelaget. This time I get a really good matchup. I face Una2 (this is of course before the Una2 nerf). Nemo3 has the volume of lightning to zap all the birds to death!

Artificer General Nemo (75 points)

Una the Skyhunter (75 points)

Una the Skyhunter (Una2)
* Druid Wilder
* 5x Scarsfell Griffon
* Pureblood Warpwolf
* Feral Warpwolf
* Woldwyrd
2x Sentry Stone & Mannikins
2x Shifting Stones

Deployment

Birds win the die roll and fly up. Ka-ka!

I spread out to threaten both zones, planning to start capping as soon as possible and put on the pressure.

I make a major mistake by a) not measuring the right side Woldwyrd's movement, and b) casting Lightning Shroud on Thorn.

Turn 2

Brick of chickens with wind wall go into the left zone, leaving not much in the right zone. The Woldwyrd is barely within shooting range of the buffed Thorn and three Purgation shots later, Thorn is a wreck.

I kill the left sentry stone and spread out as much as I can in that zone to make it harder to clear.

On the right flank, I kill the few contesting models.

2-0

Turn 3

Birds to the bird thing and jam the right zone. One Lance remains in the right zone, good job!

Nemo feats and I start zapping and leaping. Every bird except one goes down! I fail to clear the zone so no-one scores, but I am crazy up on attrition now.

Turn 4

I have not measured out Una2's shooting threat range, though. I know that he can get a Pureblood spray and a Mannikin spray unto Nemo3, but turns out that with Snipe Una2 gets pretty far. After hitting me with sprays, Una2 lands enough shots on Nemo to kill the old man!

Circle wins by assassination!

Post Mortem

Well played by my opponent Lars Erik there! Una has a hard time against Nemo, but he found an angle and killed Nemo off.

I should have played Nemo a bit further back so that he could not get hit by quite as much. Possibly casting 2 Chain Lightnings was a bit much. Camping 3 more would have helped a lot, but of course that would have increased the risk that 2 birds would have lived to flank Nemo.

Again, my team-mates carry the day and win both their matches. We can still win this!

Battle Report #67: Nemo3 vs Karchev (Team Tournament #1)

In the first game in the team tournament I get thrown under the bus end end up with a pretty bad matchup against Karchev, played by Odd-Erik. Nemo3 may hit hard, but Karchev has too many boxes to assassinate easily, and 8 Heavies is a lot to chew through.

Artificer General Nemo (75 points)

Karchev the Terrible (75 points)

Theme: Winter Guard Kommand

* 3x Juggernaut
* 2x Kodiak
* 2x Marauder
* Devastator
4 Battle Mechanics
6 Winter Guard Infantry

Deployment

I win the die roll and go first, and spread out. Karchev bricks up in the middle, as Karchevs have done since time immemorial.

Turn 1

I run up and fan out, hoping to be able to get some angle.

Karchev moves up. Winter Guard fan out behind him, ready to be sacrificed.

Turn 2

Well, I guessed I played that a bit too defensively, probably I should have had the Lances a bit closer.

Anyway, I think I see an opening. A firefly runs in and jams up everything on the left flank, getting within 5" of Karchev. Thorn moves up. Nemo feats ands arcs a couple of Chain Lightnings through Thorn at Karchev, removing all his sac pawn targets. The GMCA moves up and tries to tag Karchev (should have done that first!), but missing on his 4+ roll. Lances assault as well as they can. It's all down to Dynamo! He needs 6's to hit... and misses on the two first rolls.

Nemo is well within reach of several Khador jacks so we shake hands.

Khador wins by assassination!

Post Mortem

Difficult matchup for Nemo, so I think I was right to go for it when I had a possible opening! A feated Dynamo does around 40 damage to ARM 19 Karchev if all the shots connect, and with the Chain Lightnings, two shots from Nemo, a Firefly shot, and a couple of assaulting Lances it could have happened.

My teammates win both their matches, so even if I failed Team Lightning Shroud is now 1-0, which is good!

Battle Report #66: Nemo3 vs Stryker1 (Norwegian Masters 2017 #5)

Of course it had to happen after I got list locked into Nemo3. I face Cygnar and Lasse is list locked into Stryker1. Nemo3 is all about lightning and in theme Stryker1 is immune. I have no feat, and no shooting. Essentially half my army does nothing, and I cannot win.

Artificer General Nemo (75 points)

Objective: Armory

* Reinholdt
* Dynamo
* Firefly

5+3 Storm Lances

The "Game"

What happens is that we play three turns, I grab the two control points that I could possibly manage to grab before getting tabled, and I concede. We shake hands, I grab a beer and we relax and watch the other games!

An impotent force hits an immovable object

Post Mortem

Everyone cracked up completely when we told them what happened. :D

Bit unlucky with that one, and of course kicking myself for not dropping Nemo3 in the first game against the double Gargantuans. I ended up going 3-2, and in 17th place out of 64 players. My strength of schedule was of course poor since I lost the first game. I had a great day, and my goal for the tournament was getting more wins than losses, so all in all it went rather well. Also, I got to play good games with friendly people all day!

Me, Nima and Kuba then decided to register a team for the 3-round Team Tournament next day, and then I went home to sleep.

Battle Report #65: Haley2 vs Vlad2 (Norwegian Masters 2017 #4)

After one of the Haley2s winning the last game, I meet Scottish player David Kane. Again I think I will need Haley2 against this, leaving me list locked for the last match.

Major Victoria Haley (75 points)

Theme: Storm Division
Objective: Armory

Major Victoria Haley (Haley2)
* Squire
* Stormwall
* Thorn
Journeyman Warcaster
* Firefly
Major Katherine Laddermore
5+3 Storm Lances

Vladimir Tzepisci, The Dark Champion (75 points)

Another Dark Champion!
A different Khador list from what I am used to see, this is going to be exciting!

Vladimir Tzepisci, The Dark Champion (Vlad2)
* Conquest
Man-O-War Kovnik
Saxon Orrik
4 Battle Mechanics
10 Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters
* Koldun Kapitan Valachev
2x2 Kayazy Eliminators
5 Man-O-War Shocktroopers
* Man-O-War Shocktrooper Officer

Deployment

Vlad wins the die roll. Conquest takes the center, with Nyss on the left and the Shocktropper brick on the right. I place Haley2 in the center to try to feat on as much as I can later. Laddermore goes with the left side Lances in order to hopefully electroleap many Nyss. Firefly and Max Lances go on the right,

Turn 1

Vlad moves up. I move up, I shoot the Conquest a bit.

Turn 2

I had forgotten about Hunter. The Nyss shoot away all the left side Lances, but play by me to leave all within shooting range. One right side Lance also gets shot. At this point I am starting to feel a bit worried.

A charging Laddermore clear some Nyss on the left side. Stormwall moves in and starts punching the Conquest, taking out about half of it and murdering some Nyss with electro leaps. Haley feats, and I use Telekinesis on some of those shield walled Shocktroppers, making them easy prey for the Lances, which kill half of them on the charge. I am a bit worried about the Conquest just shooting Haley and spiking, so I stay a bit back. Unfortunately that means I cannot get his back line in my feat. Good job for my opponent spreading out so well!

I score the right flag.

1-0

Turn 3

Mechanics fix the Conquest, he punches back. Vlad feats and some Eliminators do a number on the Storm Lances, but luckily Laddermore survives and keeps on contesting.

Laddermore kills more Nyss. Stormwall punches more Conquest, electroleaping all the repair dudes. I think the Conquest was left at one Movement box or something like that. I try to spell away the contesting Eliminators with Haley and Thorn, but they live. Squire moves into position to try to grab the left flag.

Turn 4 and 5

We are getting short on time, so no more photos until the end. I can't recall exactly in what order what happened, so I'll summarize the action on each flank,

On the left flag, I grab the left flag first with the Journeyman, and then with the Squire. Haley moves in that direction to add some Arcane Bolts to the mix. Everything there dies in the back-and-forth, leaving me with a Squire on the flag and Vlad with nothing to contest on the left flank.

In the center, my badly dinged up Stormwall finally murders the Conquest and also the contesting Man-O-War.

With me firmly in control of the left flank, and a Stormwall in the center, there is no way for Vlad to contest me. If I remember correctly the final score is 5-2, with almost everything dead.

5-2

Post Mortem

The best and most exiting game I had during the weekend! I was pretty sure I would lose when I went down on attrition right at the beginning, but Haley is Haley, and when I managed to clear the left flank then the win was assured. I am happy that I managed to play the scenario and move models to flag capping positions, it's something I still sometimes forget.

My opponent was very nice all through the match, we played a clean and enjoyable tactical game that was tense all the way through. Afterwards we grabbed a beer and waited for the last round to begin.

I was list locked into Nemo3, and all I could hope for was "please, please, no Cygnar Storm Division mirror in the last match". Guess what happens.
